In 2013, Brazilian director Christiane Jatahy was propelled into the limelight with Julia, bringing her to the attention of French audiences. She has since become a leading director. For this piece, Christiane Jatahy took inspiration from Strindberg’s Mademoiselle Julie. Mixing recorded images, live footage and theatrical performances, Julia explores the relationship between theatre and cinema. In a carnal interpretation, marked by the physical commitment of its actors, Julia Bernat, Jatahy’s favourite actress, provides a remarkable performance in the role of the aristocratic girl who seduces her father’s valet. The result is a highly original and eloquent example of live theatre and performance, which also serves as a commentary on modern society. Jatahy has all the hallmarks of an outstanding artist!
