Using a variety of media (painting, sculpture, photography, installation, and performance), in her work, Naomi Lulendo uses the concept of the “misappropriation” of words, meanings, objects, the body, and identity. She inventories images and symbols coming from various geographical spheres—fashion imagery, kitsch decoration, interior spaces, architectural and botanical motifs, etc.—to understand how they relate to a given territory, whether imagined or fantasized. Interested in cosmologies, especially voodoo cosmology, she draws on the language, tales, and aesthetics of her Creole and African origins. At the FRAC, Naomi Lulendo presents a cathartic performance, where ritual rhymes with spells, architecture with the body, and movement with experience.
