Created in 2018, this show by Milo Rau received a rare, enthusiastic and unanimous public and critical reception. La Reprise. Histoire(s) du théâtre (I) is based on a tragic news story that occurred in Liège when a young gay man of North African origin was murdered. In an attempt to reconstruct this on stage, the Belgian director, whose theatrical productions continue to flirt with the documentary genre, questions the relationship between stage and reality, in particular when it comes to the representation of violence, and subsequently the authority of theatre. With four professional actors and two amateurs, and the singular use of video, this play, with hints of Godard, creates a mise-en-abyme between reality and theatre with extraordinary subtlety, in a register as intelligent as it is moving.
