Omijé — meaning tear in the Yoruba language—was born from the meeting between French performer and vocalist Violaine Lochu, Beninese singer and percussionist Folly Azama, and Nigerian bassist Oluwatosin Oyee. Starting with the figure of the mourner, present in West Africa, as it was up to recently in southern Europe, these three musicians, each with an eclectic background, bring their respective musical cultures into resonance, in order to explore the notion of lamentation. Yoruba, mina or fon funeral songs intersect with noisy, minimalist, rock sounds, in an immersive and intense project where improvisation and experimentation hold a key place.
